Kia ora

I’m a student at the University of Otago, enrolled in the Master of Science Communication programme – click the link to read more about my course – Popularising Science. My particular interests and passions are ornithology and contemporary automata.

My first connection with contemporary automata happened in a craft shop in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The maker of the work was Peter Markey, and I was instantly attracted to his quirky designs and to the idea that by turning a handle a narrative would unfold on the ‘stage’.

This composite image is made up of my work, some pieces I own and pieces I like.

In 2011 I worked with students in school making card and wood automata. I was particularly interested in the construction process and whether they would retain information. I gave students a questionnaire to ask for feedback on the project and whether they could draw/describe automata movements.
